Betrayal of Islam by the Nationalists: Pakistan
The result was that a tremendous clash occured in the pricipal cities between Sikhs and Muslims and for a very long time there was a complete choas. On March 5 and 6, large scale rioting and arson which reduced the city to shambles took place in Amritsar. Three days later the Working Committee of Indian National Congress passed a resolution demanding a division of the Punjab and by implication agreeing to a division of India. On April 2, 1947, Gandhi agreed to a partition of India. By end of April 1947, it appeared certain that Pakistan and Hindustan would emerge from a divided India.
By June4, 1947, Mountbatten, the new Viceroy, delivered the stunning announcemant that Britain would decamp in a mere eleven weeks, and would leave the subcontinent by August 15, 1947.
